Nic Cage on the set of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance by mi-16evilin movies

This actually isn't a picture of him in costume and makeup for the movie, it's just how he normally shows up to work.

My screen on my laptop is broken. How do I set my laptop up to be remote accessed without being able to see the screen? by thegoddamntardisin techsupport

I wanted to see if I could do this without buying a cable, but it looks like that's what I'm going to end up doing.

As far as I can tell, remote access is enabled on the old computer. However, when I try to connect from the new computer, I can't find the old one. Any ideas?

The 9 highest-rated canceled TV shows this season by DukeofSquirrelin entertainment

[–]thegoddamntardis 1 point2 points ago

I agree that community seems to have gone down hill, but what bothers me isn't a lack of ideas- its the fact that the characters on the show are no longer people, they're cartoons. I've noticed that I care a lot less about several people in the show that I did a season ago.

Also, I think Dan Harmon worries too much about being creative at the expense of the humor- it almost seems like Donald Glover is the comic relief in a show that used to be a comedy.

TB institute confirms 8 patients resistant to all known TB drugs (crosspost from r/globalhealth) by falafelcopterin worldnews

[–]thegoddamntardis 25 points26 points ago

Just to clarify, the reason that number is only 8 is that the other patients have already died.

I'm not an expert, but is this as scary as it sounds?

Thinking Moderation? Think Again!! by krysteldin Health

This article is awful. It's basically one giant naturalistic fallacy with some straw man arguments and flat-out wrong information peppered in for good measure.

What do you think about all the studies that say taking vitamins will cause you to die sooner? by molliemander05in Health

[–]thegoddamntardis 0 points1 point ago

Vitamin A, C, E, and all minerals (ie selenium and zinc) are antioxidants and are found in virtually all major multivitamins. While the study isn't a perfect match to what you're looking for, it is still very relevant.

The wikipedia page on multivitamins mentions a few studies, although nothing very definitive.

Ultimately, TomatoRunner is right- multivitamins are probably a waste of money.

What do you think about all the studies that say taking vitamins will cause you to die sooner? by molliemander05in Health

[–]thegoddamntardis 2 points3 points ago

The research being referenced is a review of 78 studies with about 300,000 people- the authors concluded with this:

We found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention.

Vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene were all associated with increased mortality, although whether or not they actually are causally linked is unclear.

On a related note, when you find yourself thinking something "sounds odd" and "surely poses no harm" based entirely off of anecdotes, it should serve as a giant red flag.

Thinking about taking a multivitamin? There's something you should know. by thegoddamntardisin Health

Observational studies definitely aren't the best form of evidence, and they are more suitable for hypothesis-generating, but they certainly aren't "garbage." Controlled trials can be expensive and difficult to perform- especially when related to diet and nutrition.

The point is that from the best available evidence, supplementing a diet with an almost random combination of vitamins may not be helpful for the general population.

Thank you for pointing this out. People who take vitamin supplements have an increased mortality rate, but some believe this is because many people choose to start taking supplements when they discover they have another disease or condition.

My point is you shouldn't take vitamins as an insurance policy thinking "it can't hurt," because the average person does not appear to benefit. The review I cited came to this conclusion:

The current evidence does not support the use of antioxidant supplements in the general population.

[–]thegoddamntardis[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's a good point. I don't want to imply that vitamins aren't necessary for anyone; people with problems absorbing vitamins and people with highly imbalanced diets may benefit from vitamin supplementation. However, a lot of people believe that they need vitamins to make up for a slightly imbalanced diet and this often is not the case.

China to Stop Harvesting Inmate Organs by thegoddamntardisin globalhealth

[–]thegoddamntardis[S] 0 points1 point ago

I can't believe China executed 15,000 people in 2000. It says 4000 were executed in 2011, but that's still something like 3 times the number that have been executed in the US in the last 35 years.

Yeah, this was a terrible execution of what could have been a fun idea. For normal people, Hanna would win, for everyone else, Hermione would.
