TROPHY CASE

I suck at making r/firstworldproblems posts by yiseowlin firstworldproblems

[–]yiseowl[S] 0 points1 point ago

I don't see how I broke them. It was a joke, just like all the posts in this subreddit. Me sucking at making r/firstworldproblems posts and never getting upvotes is my idea of a first world problem.

Relax, it's just the r/firstworldproblems subreddit.

Reddit Rallies for Dying Man! by SourceFedin videos

[–]yiseowl 19 points20 points ago

On behalf of my family and Scott, thank you reddit for sending my uncle letters and brightening his spirits! This community is amazing.

I plan to post a video update showing Scott's response to all the mail soon - seeing as though this happened a month and a half ago, hopefully people don't think this.

Smoked salmon, guacamole, and cream cheese on tostones [food porn] by wutsthedealin Paleo

[–]yiseowl 0 points1 point ago

What's your method in making the tostones? I like to boil sliced green plantains, flatten them on a bake sheet covered parchment paper, lightly brush them with virgin coconut oil, then bake them until crispy.

I find that frying them requires too much oil and due to the heat the health benefits of whatever oil you use are depleted.

Got myself a little job - Configuring iPads isn't that bad by Kanon-Kajin apple

[–]yiseowl 14 points15 points ago

How is getting an iPad over a laptop anywhere close to awesome? This sub-reddit is nauseating and your comment is the straw that broke the camel's back - I just unsubscribed.

As a Mac user since 2002 sitting here on my MacBook Pro typing this comment, my feeling is that iPads and tablets have a ways to go and are still largely used for consumption of content as opposed to content creation.

What's more important for a middle schooler, content creation or consumption? A laptop enables writers, scientists, filmmakers, video editors, musicians, sound engineers, graphic designers, artists, etc. to make the most out of their talents - whereas iPads offer a fraction of that via apps monitored and restricted by Apple.

The iPad is a beautiful device just as the iPhone is, but I'd be careful to let your love for Apple interfere with the opportunities modern, open-source computing has to offer. My feeling is that middle school kids in Sweden would be a lot better off with a $100 Linux based OLPC laptop over a $499 iPad.

[TP] Olive oil potato chips! by rootybin Paleo

[–]yiseowl 0 points1 point ago

I thought canola oil was more heat stable than olive oil. Anyway, those things are definitely not baked. I actually bought a bag for a Superbowl party I had a while back. They were delicious, yet clearly fried and heavily saturated with oil. I mean, if we're gonna get this paleo-technical about this stuff, I don't even see the point of debating whether or not potato chips are conducive to good heath. In fact, Arthur De Vany argues in his book, The New Evolution Diet, that deep fried potatoes is one of the worst foods on earth you could eat. I think you'd be better off eating a loaf of whole wheat bread before a bag of those things.

In my opinion these things aren't even close to good for you - but regardless, you'd be better off getting canola oil potato chips. The problem with potato chips in general is that they are deep fried in high heat and the essential nutrients in the oil used pretty much gets lost in that process. The only thing that make canola oil slightly better in this situation is that it has a higher smoke point and better starting n3/n6 ratio. Besides, I thought regular potatoes weren't technically paleo.... whatever, a lot of this stuff is quasi-science anyhow.

Get baked food off your glass cookware by scrubbing it with a bit of aluminum foil by enterstipin LifeProTips

Or just soak your glass cookware for 30 minutes or more and save your aluminum foil.

This really should be /r/LifeAmatureTips

Grass-fed lamb + onions + kale + tomatoes, baked yucca, avocado, & a glass of organic tempranillo. by yiseowlin Paleo

Is $6/pound for NZ ground lamb a bad deal? Regardless of where you buy it, I didn't think 6 bucks was that bad.

Unreal. Literally better tasting than potatoes and even french fries. When boiled and then baked yucca takes on a very pleasant and crunchy taste.

  • Started by sauteeing the kale in coconut oil over med-low heat for 15 minutes, then added the onions and tomatoes (turning the heat up to med), then finally the ground lamb ($6/pound at Whole Foods).
  • Peeled then boiled the yucca for about 20 minutes (until soft). Then put the pieces on a baking sheet with parchment paper. I brushed the yucca with a little extra virgin olive oil and baked at 450 for about 35 minutes (flipping half way).

Dear AskReddit visitors - Please read and upvote (I get no karma as it's a self-post) by ImNotJesusin AskReddit

[–]yiseowl 22 points23 points ago

I believe this reminder has been posted in part because of a post I made about my uncle two days ago. The post was up for about 3 hours, went to number one on Reddit, and then was removed.

To be honest, I feel a universal no personal information rule is a bit problematic. I've been using reddit since 2006 and can tell you that this degree of content monitoring and control has never been so serious - and that's not to say it has made reddit any better.

At the same time, I understand this site has gotten very popular and it is our duty to respect each others privacy. However, saying I can't post personal information about myself, or information about a family member who's given me permission do so? I'm not so sure about that.

The personal information ban is a reddit wide rule part of reddiquitte. Yet, it gets broken pretty much every second on this site. People are doing IAMA's and posting their surnames, others are posting to their personal twitter accounts in comments they leave in /r/askreddit, while some are posting easily identifiable pictures of themselves in /r/pics.

Sharing personal information here is what, in part, gives us such a strong sense of community. I recall back in 2009 someone posted about finding a flyer regrading an open invite to a man's 90th birthday. Reddit proceeded to bond together and send that man 1000's of birthday cards - his family later posted to reddit about how grateful they were for the gesture. Massive and random acts of kindness here like that, as well as other wonderfully unique things that happen on reddit will simply become nonexistent if reddit continues to monitor and control content more rigorously.

In my opinion, since /r/reddit.com was deleted, this has become the last and only sub-reddit which effectively voices the opinions of the masses here. Thus, it's a pretty important sub-reddit. And the fact that I can't share my own personal information here due to the fact that it can't be verified makes me feel that something is flawed.

Reddit has a powerful influence, and the no personal information rule makes sense in that it prevents innocent people from potentially getting hurt. At the same time, it can prevent really awesome things from happening here.
