Ruby class syntax

I contribute to the ruby community every day of the year.

What do you do?

Ruby class syntax

"The wiki page had all the details I needed to learn about the syntax of public/private methods and inheritance"

and yet it was wrong about a startling amount of it.

haha! that too!

Ruby class syntax

zenspider 2 points3 points 15 hours ago[-]

This isn't really the ruby class syntax and is full of misnomers. Take this document with a grain of... skepticism. You'll get a lot more accuracy and information from something like the pickaxe. I guess you get what you pay for.

FWIW, the ruby class syntax can be summed up as simple as:

"class" const_name ("<" expr)?
  expr*
"end"

using ebnf(ish).

Is anyone else finding the ads all over this page (both sidebars, bottom of article, and footer) to be extremely ironic?

So, I finally decided to pick up a hard copy of On Lisp...

I don't still have the PDF. I don't know if lulu lets you download it again, do you?

re: embedding fonts. I think I opened the .ps file in OSX's preview and then saved as PDF. shrug It was a while ago.

I did go with 5.5 x 8.5. I did that in OSX's preview. It was a lot easier than I thought it'd be.

Seattle cop involved in (and cleared of charges) Post Alley shooting of a lawyer convicted of drunk driving.

Dornay was represented by his sister, attorney Margita Dornay, 42, who was reinstated to the Washington State Bar in June after her license was suspended for three years for lying under oath.

Their younger brother, Dustin Dornay, 34, was also arrested for DUI and is scheduled for trial Sept. 22.

Now that is one classy family.

completely fair.

I actually wholeheartedly disagree. This is a nice implementation, but it doesn't actually take ruby into account in its design. By being so proc-centric you've done your runtime a great disservice and slowed down your implementation. You can do the same thing cleaner and more efficiently using case &/or defs without creating tons of procs and schlepping them all over.

That, and it should be test driven to be proper ruby.

Is this what is in a mosquito dunk?

I just added a bunch of those to various sites around my condo in Seattle. The water was TWITCHING and chock full of mosquito larvae.

There are some programs that my professor is requiring us to use which don't work on Mac. I was thinking of installing Boot Camp. Is there a good how-to guide that anyone can recommend?

zenspider 3 points4 points 9 days ago[-]

seconded... it is cleaner and easier to just run windows from within osx than it is to reboot ad nausium. Enables things like shared clipboards, easy file sharing, etc.

ETA: PS. your prof is an ass-hat.

Rails 3.0: It's ready!

zenspider -1 points0 points 10 days ago[-]

absolutely! (tho I prefer sequel myself... very clean code!)

but that doesn't help someone with a rails 2.x app looking to migrate (easily/easier) to rails 3.

Rails 3.0: It's ready!

zenspider 1 point2 points 11 days ago* [-]

Yeah. tenderlove has been working on arel continuously (including a complete rewrite) for the past several weeks.

ETA: to be clear, tenderlove is working against trunk of rails + arel.

Rails 3.0: It's ready!

zenspider 1 point2 points 11 days ago[-]

Excuse me? I sit next to tenderlove day in and day out.

Rails 3.0: It's ready!

zenspider -2 points-1 points 11 days ago[-]

It's ready? hahaha... um. sure.

Rails 3's active record with Arel is 2x slower than rails 2.3's active record. tenderlove is working to help fix that, but it certainly isn't in this release.

I think I'll be sticking to rails 2.x for now.

/r/Seattle, where do you go to relax, code, get some decent drinks and maybe a little food?

zenspider 1 point2 points 11 days ago[-]

bauhaus is certainly a strong part of the reason I moved to Cap Hill. I wouldn't exactly say there was food nearby tho... Either it isn't food (with some strong exceptions like Machiavelli) or it isn't nearby. Great people watching. A bit crowded. Their coffee is better now that they've improved their roast across all the cafes in their family. I've spent many nights in there until 1AM.

zenspider 0 points1 point 11 days ago[-]

that sounds very awesome.

in UW:

both trabant and sureshot close at midnight. I dunno about sureshot, but trabant doesn't have many food options. Luckily, you're at 45th and the ave, so it doesn't matter. Plenty of food and booze options nearby.

on Cap Hill:

Bauhaus is open until 1am, has good people watching, no booze, and pastries (including ding dongs!). It is also a short walk from the convention center bus stop.

Vivace on Broadway is open until 11, has better espresso than you've ever had, has IPA + sammiches + salads + other food options. The 49 stops a block away, or you can take the 72 downtown, hop over to pike, and take the 49 or 43 up.

Online Coffee on Olive is open until 1am, has some pastries (but is close enough to Broadway and especially Dicks). Dunno about booze. 43 is ideal for online.

I prefer Vivace and spend a ton of time coding there. I loves it. I'd also be happy to pair with you, tho it has been years since I did any considerable python. Just don't tell me you've been coding on Twisted or I may go homicidal (again).

I see what you did there, enterprise monkey!

IT BEGINS: Apple's iPads Are Invading The Corporate Market And Killing Microsoft's Laptops

zenspider 0 points1 point 15 days ago[-]

Okay ... well aside from condescendingly calling white collar workers "monkeys" for some inane reason, you're apparently wrong about the type, quality, and quantity of work that occurs in large enterprise environments.

I call them "enterprise monkeys" because that's what they are. Relatively unimportant cogs in a very large machine that pretty much waste time and energy doing what they're doing. They're a predominant subset of white collar workers.

I don't see anything "apparently wrong" about my assessment in the slightest and I currently work for a very large and very enterprisey corporation. The type and quality (hah!) of work done by these folk is a joke 90% of the time... and I would never underestimate the quantity of the work they do.

How about you get your panties unbunched before you blow a gasket? The use of "monkey" should have been a clue that my comment was cynical at best. You obviously took the article (100% speculative and anecdotal) and these comments (100% cynical) way too seriously.

Applescripts, anyone?
